consulate in benghazi, libya. it is pretty graphic stuff. so within this video, you will see libyans pulling an injured but living person from the rubble. turns out that person was ambassador chris stevens who, as we all know now, later died. these are some pretty incredible pictures and cnn's arwa damon walks us through scene by scene. >> reporter: this is the first thing that he says he saw and filmed at the consulate compound. the cafeteria building up in flames. it was shortly before midnight, september 11th. the smoke so thick, the compound's main house is barely visible. and then this. after breaking through a window, men shout they found a body. suddenly one of them cries out. he's alive. he's alive. the crowd cheers. god is great. rushing for a car, they realize it is a foreigner. i was filming the video and i thought it was an american, he recalls. but i thought it was a driver or a security guy, i never thought it was the ambassador. it is clear from the rest of the video that the man they pulled out was ambassador christopher stev

was sparked by the movie and the movie alone and now i think the issues are what really happened in benghazi. we still don't know exactly what happened. was it preplanned? and then the spread to the other countries. >> the longer this goes on, the more it becomes about the president's responsibility and the less it becomes about mitt romney's initial reaction to it. >> but his foreign policy has not been a predominant issue in a lot of these races and with the economy as sluggish as it is, you wouldn't think this would trump everything. >> world events have a way of disrupting elections at times and no one saw this becoming as a predominant issue in the campaign. >> obama had a lot of strong points on foreign policy, he had a pretty nice list of thing and pretty close with afghanistan but the arab spring was always that was something very unclear how it was going, whether it was a success for the u.s. and i think it's come back to bite him in a way that's turned foreign policy into more after neutral issue. >> thank you. he's king of the pool, but is he's[ mrs. hutchison ] but is friday nigh

i want to bring in arwa damon in benghazi. she's on the phone. and cnn foreign affairs reporter elise labott at the state department. arwa, first to you. you've been talking to libyan officials. what's the latest on what you're hearing about whether this attack was pre-planned or not? >> reporter: well, we're actually hearing different accounts as to whether or not that may be the fact. the country's head of the general national congress, effectively the nation's president saying that he does believe this is a pre-planned attack or rather was a pre-planned attack carried out by extremist groups possibly affiliated with or sympathetic to al qaeda. other government officials say as of now they have no indication whatsoever that this was a pre-planned attack. numerous eyewitnesses have been telling us that while the attack was taking place -- extremist militias that does in fact operate in this area with a fair degree of impunity, something that's incredibly troubling not just to libyan government but clearly now to international governments as well
